COVID-19 Updates

Membership Changes

Due to the extraordinary times we live in today, the Club has (for a trial period) changed its membership pricing to a “Pay What You Want” format. Minimum dues for Regular Memberships have been reduced to $20/yr, Junior and Senior Memberships are now $15/yr., and Associates are now $3/yr.

All members will receive the following benefits:

  • Personalized Membership card
  • Club stickers
  • Invitations to our members-only events
  • Access to our monthly online lectures
  • A digital subscription to our publication, En Passant
  • A chance to compete for the title of Club Champion

If a member pays more than the minimum dues, we offer bonus rewards depending on the total:

  • Passed Pawn: 15% discount on online/OTB tournaments, in addition to the benefits above
  • Bishop Pair: 20% discount on on all of our club merchandise (year round), including all Passed Pawn benefits and benefits listed above

As this is still work-in-progress, we are looking at improving the bonus rewards. Note that when we do make changes, any members who have committed to any bonus levels will be eligible for any changes and additional perks to those levels.

Since March, memberships were frozen as we could not keep the club available. Effective today, we are unfreezing memberships and migrating them to the new model. Refunds will be offered based on the pro-rated difference of what members paid in the previous model minus the cost of a membership today.

COVID-19 Update

Dear Friends:

Due to the extended business closure mandate and stay-at-home orders from local authorities, we are cancelling the April Blitz (scheduled for April 15), postponing the Golden Triangle Open (scheduled for April 18th), and postponing the April Lecture (scheduled for April 29). The Board will meet in early May to reassess any new information and we will keep you informed should future changes be needed.

In light of these closures, we are extending all active annual club memberships by an additional two months, retroactive March 1st.

Thank you.

COVID-19 Update

Dear Friends:

Due to the shutdown of our building, the Club will be closed until further notice. There has been no indication that anyone associated with the Club, who attended Club events, or entered the building has been infected with or exposed to COVID-19, however there are confirmed cases in Allegheny County.

Unfortunately, this also means we are suspending the Byland Memorial Tournament, cancelling our March Blitz (scheduled for March 18), and cancelling our March Lecture (scheduled for March 25). Sunday & Monday classes are postponed until April 19. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Please keep in mind that this is still a rapidly evolving situation. The Board will meet again on March 25 to reassess any new information from our local authorities and we will keep you informed should future changes be needed.

Thank you.

COVID-19 Update

Dear Friends of the Pittsburgh Chess Club:

The PCC Board of Directors are tracking the COVID-19 pandemic very closely. Please be assured that the health, safety, and well-being of our members, volunteers, and visitors is always our top priority. After much consideration, we have decided to maintain our regular club hours and to proceed with previously scheduled events. This decision is based on the guidance from local authorities, including: the City of Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County Health Department, Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control. Please be aware that this situation is evolving rapidly, and we will continue to keep you informed should future changes to Club hours, classes, tournaments, or special events be required.

Until further notice, we will be adhering to the following common sense procedures:

  • A suspension of hand-shaking before and after matches. As an alternative, we recommend an elbow-bump or a conscientious nod or wave.
  • If you have a fever, please don't come to the Club. You must be fever-free for 48 hours before returning.
  • If you have recently traveled to any country designated as Level 1, 2, or 3 by the CDC, we ask that you do not enter the Club or tournament hall until two weeks after returning to the US.
  • Please wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. The Club will ensure there is an ample supply of soap and alcohol-based hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • The Club will provide disinfectant wipes to clean boards and pieces.
  • The Club will have ample supplies of Kleenex. Covid-19 is spread mostly by airborne droplets. Kleenex is preferable to sneezing on the board or even into your sleeve.

For your own safety and the safety of others, please:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • If you are sick, stay home until you are feeling better.

We’re thankful for your support, understanding, and compliance in this time of uncertainty.

Mark Jeromin
President, Pittsburgh Chess Club
